Rocky mountain treats: Great paces to eat in Canmore

downtown canmore with view of the Rocky MountainsCanmore is one of my favourite day trip destinations from Calgary, so I have a growing list of favourite places to eat and drink there. Check the map at the bottom of this page to see where they’re all located.

Le Fournil

This modern French bakery serves as both a take-away bakery and a small eat-in breakfast spot. The aroma of fresh-baked bread fills the space, and they offer quite a few varieties of loose leaf tea. The french toast is heavenly. Just try to leave without buying some of the artisanal French pastries to go.

Best for: breakfast, tea/coffee, pastries

Summit Café

My friend and I fortified ourselves here before a winter hike in Grotto Canyon. It’s a popular breakfast plates looking out on a mountain view at the Summit Cafe, one of my favourite places to eat in Canmorebreakfast and lunch place up on the ridge. If you’re lucky, you might snag a window table with a great mountain view.

The breakfast burrito and huevos rancheros are tasty and filling – perfect pre-hike fuel. Besides Tex-Mex items, the menu includes standard egg combos, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal and fresh-baked muffins and cinnamon buns. Some dishes feature locally smoked Valbella ham, which is also piled onto sandwiches for lunch.

Best for: breakfast

Communitea

Head north a couple of blocks from Main Street to find this bustling and cozy cafe. They offers a large selection of lovely house-blended teas. They also have creative healthy dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu emphasizes vegetarian and gluten-free options. I’ve enjoyed the rice bowls, but the wraps and paninis have always looked tempting too.

Best for: lunch, tea, vegetarian, gluten-free

Iron Goat Pub & Grill

Just down the road from the Summit Café, this is another spot with stunning views. The rustic timber-framed space has three levels and the main room is dominated by a giant fireplace. They’re  known for their pizzas baked in a stone oven, steaks and gourmet burgers. The patio is a great experience in warmer weather.

Best for: lunch, casual dinner

Aroma

When the waiter at this homey Mexican place overheard us saying we were cold, he proclaimed “You need tequila!” Now that’s my kind of greeting. And the food is my kind of Mexican – more authentic than any I’ve tried in Calgary.  Our enchiladas verdes and tostadas were delicioso. We opted for sangria over margaritas, but I doubt you can go wrong either way.

Best for: lunch, casual dinner, vegetarian, gluten-free

Sage Bistro

This longtime town favourite serves hearty entrees featuring local ingredients in the main floor dining room. On my last visit we went upstairs to the lounge for wine and tapas. Everything was delectable: crab cakes, candied salmon charcuterie, apple fennel & walnut salad, a chocolate creation for dessert. The wine flights (red and white) were a splendid complement.

Best for: fancy dinner, tapas, wine tasting

Crazyweed

This is the hippest dining destination on my list, providing a big city contemporary dining experience in a small mountain town. They offer both tapas and full entree options, but Crazyweed’s cuisine is more globally influenced. They also have an extensive wine list.

I’ve never had anything less than excellent, whether it’s meat, fish, pasta or a creative vegetable dish. They offer lots of dairy-free options and a few gluten-free items too. The Rendang Short Ribs – wow.

Best for: fancy dinner, tapas, dairy free

Where the Buffalo Roam

This is an awesome little lounge / bar with great cocktails and fun snacks. They’ve got appetizers, sandwiches and salads, but the creative beverage concoctions and curated craft beer selections are the real stars.

Best for: drinks
